Solo exhibition by Worawat Chortabtim (Budis)

04/07/2004 - 30/07/2004

Bangkok is ugly. You sit in a taxi and feel trapped by the chaos of the city streets and the waste of time spent in traffic - time that could be spent doing other tasks. Where is the beauty, the great design ? Like most of us, Budis says he always felt this way when he had to come to Bangkok. As a student he remembered the best designers produced great work, involving clear and easy composition. The streets of Bangkok definitely contrast with the way we define ‘great design work&lsquo.

Budis held this opinion until one day when he had a chance to go right to the top of a tall tower on Silom Road and look around at the city. Suddenly my thoughts changed. There is a structure and beauty to the city which can’t be seen from the street. “I try to use lines and colour to add volume to my compositions, to show that there is beauty there if you look more deeply or from a new perspective”, he says.

At first glance his paintings appear to be abstract works but if you look closer, the structure becomes clear: the shapes and colours separate into blocks; buildings and streets lead from one picture to the next forming a unique birds eye view of city life, seen away from the distraction and mayhem of the street. “I saw the beauty there and I want to pass that on to others”, concludes Budis.
